Family Amble and Quiz
Start outside Rickmansworth School. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow the path beside Croxley News. Turn left at the end and then right to reach the road. Cross into the road opposite. Just after no. 32, look through the hedge on your right.
What can you see? Is there anything missing from this building?
During World War Two, this building had an air raid siren mounted on top to warn the villagers of bombing raids.
Turn back and follow the road to the left and up to The Green. Turn left towards the war memorial.

What special importance will it have in 2025?
Cross the road carefully opposite New Road.
When and why were the trees on the Green either side of New Road planted?
Go down New Road to no. 17.
Can you see a clue on the house about a famous family who once lived here? (It was once the home of the great grandson of the famous lady.)
Go back to The Green and turn right. Notice Providence Hall (16th century). Why was the tree in front of it planted in 1953?
Continue past all the houses and turn right through the gate into The Orchard. What does the bench on the left commemorate?
Still in the Orchard, walk back past the gate and find a tree with another plaque. When and why was this one planted?
Now go straight across the Orchard on the path alongside Yorke Mead School and around the field to the car park. Cross the car park and walk through the alleyway to New Road. Turn left and continue to the library. Once inside, have a good look at the map of Croxley Green:
When was Dickinson Square built?
When did the tube station open?
What burnt down in 1992?
What was the population of Croxley in 1901? and in 1991?
Note down something else that interests you.
Cross New Road carefully and walk back towards the Co-Op. Take a look at Dickinson Square, built for the workers at Dickinson’s Paper Mill which used to stand on the canal where the Byewaters Estate is now.
Can you spot the date on the chimney of the last but one house on the right before Watford Road?
Walk around the square itself and back to New Road. Turn left and notice the names and dates over some of the houses. New Road Service Station was once the village blacksmiths and number 22 used to be the grocer’s shop.
Walk down Yorke Road to the old Victorian school which has been restored.
