The Mission Church - Chandler's Cross

Experience showed that for various reasons it was not always possible for residents from outlying areas such as Chandler’s Cross to get to All Saints Church. Consequently it was arranged for services to be held in a ‘Lodge’ near to a house known as The White House. The All Saints Church parish magazine records that a Mrs. Wiggins gave permission for services to be held at The Lodge on Sundays and additionally every Tuesday evening at 7pm. Services were conducted by the vicar of Chipperfield and the vicar of Croxley Green acting alternately.

Mr. Henry Baldwin Finch, the owner of ‘Red Heath’ (now York House School) provided a site for the erection of a small iron building which was known as ‘The Mission Church’ (estimated cost £100),the running of which was supervised by the Rev Donnell, vicar of All Saints.

The Mission Church was opened on 22nd January 1903, with some 70 people present and whilst in use the congregation would take pride in making the interior very attractive for special occasions. The little church served local residents until 1978 during which time it was transferred into Chipperfield parish due to boundary changes in 1964. The building, situated opposite Chandlers Arms Restaurant, was sold in 1981 and is now a listed building.
