Mayfayre Estate
Additional land on the Watford side of Croxley Green became available at this time too for another new estate, but this time somewhat smaller - just five acres. The area was designated and advertised as ‘luxury town houses’ which were advertised for sale in the autumn of 1972. The land was originally part of the LMS goods yard and partly used as a joinery works and coal yard as well as a depot for scrap metal. An embankment over twenty feet high had to be removed with over 50,000 cubic feet of spoil - a mixture of clay and ash.
Fifty one Georgian-style three and four bedroom homes were planned around enclosed garden courtyards with access for vehicles at the rear via a service road. The developers Hunting Gate Ltd of Hitchin anticipated that the first completed houses would be ready for occupation by mid/late 1973.
