Football
The magnetic attraction of the game of football amongst the early villagers once they had left school depended on the availability of somewhere to play. Happily the managers of the John Dickinson mill were able to provide land for this and other sports for the whole village to use. Their workforce were able to organise teams but as the village grew, men not working at the mill created separate teams.
Initially land was was made available opposite the Red House public house but when this was taken for the cuttings for the Metropolitan Railway in the 1920's John Dickinson Company bought land called 'Ollings', off The Green.
The pavilion from the first sports ground is known to have been 'walked' to the new site, which was named the Dickinson's Sports Ground.
As time passed, the local Rickmansworth Urban District Council felt able to improve the sporting facilities for the locality. Two sites, one at the top of Baldwins Lane and one off Barton Way backing onto Winton Crescent, were purchased.
Many teams were created and played in local divisions on all these three sites. However, it does not appear that any records of these teams have been saved. Residents have made available photographs, some with basic details only.
Can you help to build up a better history and if possible identify some of these images that require titles and/or a description?
