Croxley Revels - Key Moments Throughout the Years
1920 There is a list of May Queens from 1920 to 1944. It was suggested that a mid summer revels be held on the Green
1938 The May Queen was Vera Hull
1939 27th February Inauguration of Croxley Green Society
1940 The first mention of Maypole celebrations. Mid summer revels to be held on the Green on 29th June 1940 from 5-8pm.
By this time Maypole celebrations had been carrying on for 21 years
1941 May Queen event held in the Guildhouse
1943 May Day celebrations
1950 It was suggested that the May Queen crowning be revived
1951 23rd June Festival of Britain - Mummers Tableaux
1952 First May Queen since 1946 at Revels. Revels committee asked to form Coronation Committee
1953 2nd June Coronation Revels. Maypole dancing. The Society retains a programme from this year
1953 End of December A separate Revels was held
1960 Brownies and Girl guides Maypole
1960/61 Mr. Paddick’s “Old Croxley” film - includes Revels
1961 Brownies and Girl guides Maypole under the supervision of Miss Joyce Newton
1966 First Procession
1977 Queen Elizabeth 11 Silver Jubilee Revels. Programme held
1993 Inaugural Pushball Tournament held as Revels finale
2000 Millennium Revels – Funding obtained from Awards For All Lottery Fund – Medieval Revels complete with jousting and exhibition battles in arena
2000 Presentation to Joyce Newton for 40 years of service to Revels
2007 Biggest ever Revels. Largest number of stalls. Estimated crowd in excess of 10,000 people.
2011 Following the successful introduction of a music stage at the Revels for the previous 3 years, Croxfest is born
2012 Revels goes from strength to strength. Over 90 stalls and a huge turnout. Revellers drawn from the West Country and from Australia!
2013 20th anniversary of the famous inter schools Pushball Tournament.
2020 Excitement escalates. Revels centenary but sadly the Revels were cancelled due to the CoronaVirus lockdown.
