How long have you lived in Croxley Green: 20-30 years

If your parents lived in Croxley Green where did they work: My childhood was in Croxley green my mother did not work after she married but when I was about 12 she worked part time in the Invoicing Deptment at Croxley Mill. My father worked for the Eastern Gas Board

What is your oldest memory of Croxley Green: Croxley Woods behind my house and Dickinsons Tennis Club

Where did you play in Croxley as a child: Barton Way rec. Croxley woods. The dell. The streets

Which school(s) did you attend in Croxley Green.Yorke Road Infants School: Yes

Which school(s) did you attend in Croxley Green.Harvey Road School: Yes

What do you remember about the school(s) you attended: My first day at Yorke road I sat next to a boy called Jack. My best friend was Jill I wish I had not lost touch with her
The toilets were outside and there were open fires in the classrooms. My mum took me to school on the back of her bike and I went home for dinner. Sports days were on Dickinsons field and we all had a lollipop. I was only at Harvey road school for a year before leaving to go to st Joan of arc in Rickmansworth. I remember playing netball. I led the team onto the court tripped over and girls fell on top of me I got a black eye. We did a show possibly at The Revels I was a gypsy in raggle gaggle gypsies oh! I left and went to Joan of arc did not enjoy that school

Do you remember any of the teachers? What was dicipline like: Yorke Road my first teacher was Mrs Graver then Miss de Woolfe can't remember the next possibly Miss Barton or Mrs Smith finally Miss Walker. The head was Miss Bridge I really thought Miss de Woolfe was called Misty Woolfe I had to stay in one lunch time to write they 10 times as I and a few others kept writing thay.
Harvey Road my teacher was Miss Hedges. Remember reading the Tales of Slimtale about a mouse and learning italic writing with an osmoroid pen. Head Master Mr Ford

What games did you play as a child: Played outside whenever possible, loved my bicycle and roller skates. Used to skate down Hazelwood Road !!! Indoor games monopoly and a game called scoop I used ti draw and paint a lot and do craft like plaster of paris moulds.


Do you still have school friends in Croxley Green: Yes childhood friends Jude and Christine like me moved away and back again

What was your first job: I was an office junior at Penman Johnson and Ewins. Solicitors opposite The Palace Theatre. Just loved that job

What did you do in your spare time away from work: Dancing at The Kingham Hall and a Trade a Union Hall. Then Top Rank when it first opened they had a lunchtime disco. Very new this was the time of bands not disco's. Also ice skating at Wembley. My friends dad got us a free pass we used to go most Sunday mornings

What can you remember of the old shops in Croxley Green: The Woodcraft shop by the met station. Used to buy beads and sometimes raffia for my craft. Great shop.

Where did you go for entertainment: Dancing and skating as above

Where did you first live in Croxley Green: Frankland Road

Where did you meet your spouse: New Penny Disco in Queens Road

Do you remember WW2 in Croxley Green: No

Other events you remember: Families picnicking by Croxley Moor on the piece of land between the canal and the moor. I learnt to swim in the River Gade there. Watching gangs of boys jumping off the bridge into the canal. Street party in Frankland Road I brought my children to my parents to celebrate 1977 Jubilee
By the millennium I was back living in Croxley Green and was part of the committee who organised the celebrations on The a Green.

What is your oldest memory of Croxley Green: Quietness, peaceful, and neighbourly, everyone looked out for each other

What do you remember about the school(s) you attended: Loved the schools, and my children went to Malvern way and little green too. It's lovely to walk past them, so many memories

Do you remember any of the teachers? What was dicipline like: Mrs Hemmings in Malvern way

What games did you play as a child: Hop scotch, climbing trees

Do you still have school friends in Croxley Green: I know quite a few that still live locally

What was your first job: I worked in Melton House in Clarendon road in the typing pool at £11 per week.

What did you do in your spare time away from work: Went to baileys every Monday night as it was free for ladies.

What can you remember of the old shops in Croxley Green: There was a green grocers at the parade of shops on the green, my sister worked there.

Where did you go for entertainment: Watford or Rickmansworth, where they had a disco in Friday nights in Watersmeet

Where did you first live in Croxley Green: Durrants Drive, where I still live

Where did you meet your spouse: At work in Watford

I remember Mr Nicholson and Mrs Bilbo at Harvey Road, in the old wooden building. I remember learning to swim in the outdoor pool and changing in the incredibly basic changing rooms!
 
Do you remember any of the teachers? What was dicipline like?
I also remember Miss Green, Mrs Lit., Mr Lovett and Mrs Parott as well as Mrs Appell the violin teacher. Discipline was quite strict but I don't remember anyone getting caned etc...
 
What games did you play as a child?
Kiss chase, French skipping, hopscotch

Ride penny farthings and help run the Rickmansworth Gateway Club for people with learning difficulties

My mum hurrying me round the corner of Winton Drive to catch the bus to Watford. Fare 6d for her 4d for me!

What do you remember about the school(s) you attended?
Being dragged in to Malvern Way on my first day by the Head Miss Hemmings,because I didn't want to go. Having mainly awful teachers at Harvey Road. Joining the choir at Ricky School 
 
Do you remember any of the teachers? What was dicipline like?
Discipline was much harsher than now. I got whacked behind the knees by my first year Malvern Way teacher,Mrs Collins,for daring to open the piano lid and press a note. In 3rd year at Harvey Road had an awful teacher for part of the year called Miss Sargent. She hit me with a ruler on my hand several times as i had been off sick and therefore not known to bring in 10p for something on that day. She had acne and a 12 string guitar. A supposed Christian,she appeared on Songs of Praise after I'd left her class. I had guitar lessons with the late Mr Tither,who was lovely and became my 4th year teacher. I had some lovely teachers at Ricky who i have never forgotten.
 
What games did you play as a child?
Skipping,Donkey,Hopscotch,cycling, roller skating 
 
Do you still have school friends in Croxley Green?
I have moved away from Croxley many years ago but still go back sometimes though haven't kept in touch with any school friends from there
 
What was your first job?
Paper girl,weekend shop assistant,then full-time lab tech
 
What did you do in your spare time away from work?
Cycle, write music, drink, spent time with my pets,
 
What can you remember of the old shops in Croxley Green?
There was one called Busy Bee in New Road that sold sweet necklaces. Gilberts bakery in Watford Road sold lovely doughnuts. Luxtons on the Green was popular with all and a sad day when George retired.
 
Where did you go for entertainment?
Watersmeet theatre, library,finding out history of local buildings 
 
Where did you first live in Croxley Green?
Winton Drive 
 
Where did you meet your spouse?
Through my bestie who lived in Springfield Close

Mrs Samuels playgroup at top of New Road. I remember the Holiday Adventure club at the Baptist church every summer. I also remember the Tufty Club, I'm sure it was also at Baptist, a road safety club. Attended St Bede's Church.

Park in Barton Way

Very strict. Wore blue and white uniform.

Do you remember any of the teachers? What was discipline like?
Miss Hemmings was Head, Miss Cowser and Mrs Adams. All very strict, I was scared of them all!

It or chase, skipping.

Yes

What was your first job?
Solicitors in Chorleywood in 1982. First pay was 29.50 for week!!

What did you do in your spare time away from work?
Out with friends

What can you remember of the old shops in Croxley Green?
I can remember the Busy bee shop near Red House and sweetshop near where Launderette used to be. Wavy Line and when the co-op had separate butchers and greengrocers. Beckfords in Baldwins lane.

Watford or Rickmansworth

no 8 eagers news/sweet/and tobacconists
no10beamonts the greengrocers
no12 g hunts grocers
no 14/16 cottages
no 18 revels garage
no 20/22 houses until 1944/5 then became 2 flats
no 24 grocers
26/28 2cottages and shop selling baby/ladies clothes and a library
30 was behind these cottages
32 was sears dairy

Rickmansworth =Croxley green - Watford
Chorleywood - Amersham -chesham

24 scots hill 1939-1966 parents were there until 1973

Where did you meet your spouse?
scots hill garage

yes quite clearly we were bombed out twice

Moving in to our house in Hastings way. (1958)

Everywhere! Mainly around Rousebarn Lane and Whippendell Woods.

What do you remember about the school(s) you attended?
Many things including the day to day activities, the teachers, school trips and going off for swimming lessons at Watford swimming baths.
The teachers were fairly strict.
We had to wear school uniform.
In the later years, we had homework every evening.

Do you remember any of the teachers? What was dicipline like?
Yes, I remember most of them. Discipline was quite strict.

As I wanted to do 'A' levels I went from Durrants to Rickmansworth School in 1968 and found the latter to be much stricter.

What games did you play as a child?
British Bulldog (in the playground at Durrants)
Rounders
Cricket
Whizzers (from Rice Krispies packets)
Beatles picture cards from bubble gum packets.

Do you still have school friends in Croxley Green?
Yes and some who have now moved away.

What was your first job?
I worked as a trainee site agent on the new school buildings at Langleybury School in 1970. I earned £5.00 per week.

What did you do in your spare time away from work?
I attended St Oswald's church and went to cubs and scouts there.

Later I joined Batchworth Sea Scouts.

Later,I spent a lot of time maintaining my car which I ran on my £5.00 per week wage! I socialised with friends at week-ends.

What can you remember of the old shops in Croxley Green?
I remember the shops at the top and bottom of Baldwins Lane at the time. At the bottom shops were Osborne's hardware shop and Waddington & Ridgers. They also owned the neqsagent's shop on the junction of Rickmansworth Road and Winton Drive where I used to work marking up the newspapers ready for the paper rounds, starting at 5.00am. At the top shops was Bryant's Fish Bar where we would often buy fish and chips and a bottle of Tizer for our lunch on Saturdays.

Where did you go for entertainment?
The cinemas in Watford - The Odeon, Gaumont, Carlton , Essoldo and Empire. We used to meet at the pubs - The Coach & Horses, The Artichoke, Fox & Hounds and The Clarendon Arms at Chandlers Cross.

We used to go to see bands playing in Watford - the technical college, Kingham Hall and the Town Hall.

Where did you first live in Croxley Green?
In Hastings Way. We moved from there to Chalfont St Peter in 1972.

Where did you meet your spouse?
We met after I moved to Chalfont St Peter where we married in 1979. We spent our honeymoon in Devon and The Isle of Wight.

Do you remember WW2 in Croxley Green?
No, I wasn't born until 1952.

Other events you remember
We regularly went to The Revels on the Green.
