Fred Housego won the BBC television quiz show Mastermind in 1980. His specialist subject in the final was the Tower of London with his victory bringing him considerable public attention. Prior to and during his time on Mastermind, he worked as a London black cab driver. It is recorded that after winning Mastermind, he was seen in Croxley Green, in his cab, with the Mastermind trophy. Other notable TV appearances were Blankety Blank, The Pyramid Game, History on Your Doorstep, the Six O'Clock Show (on which he was a presenter) and This is Your Life.
In 1981 Fred Housego took part in the international version of Mastermind in Sydney, Australia. He again used The Tower of London as his subject in the competition. He came fourth with 16 points. Also in September 1981 Mastermind winner Fred Housego and the Mastermind runner up Sam Mortimer teamed up to run a Mastermind competition in aid of the Watford General Hospital appeal to raise £40,000 by Christmas for laser equipment.
Fred lived in Durrants Drive, Croxley, and was briefly a member of the Croxley Camera Club, occasionally promoting Club activities through his London Weekend contacts. £130 of the sum raised at this show was donated to the RPS in Bath towards installation of a disabled lift.

Croxley Green Residents' and Ratepayers Association held their Annual General Meeting at the Library on Barton Way on Friday 21st March 1986 and the special guest speaker was Fred Housego.
