The Albert Freeman Diaries - 1920
Albert has begun implementing plans for council housing in Croxley Green and his entries at this stage, he will be referring to the housing site as Gonville Avenue, a road leading from the Watford Road.

January 6th
At Army hut Croxley gravel pits, testing drain from sink waste. Croxley mills to see Mr. Coutts, cheques for Burial Board.
 (Mr Coutts was the Chief Cashier for John Dickinson paper mill and lived in Dickinson Square
The accommodation for the families at the gravel pits was similar to that used for army personnel)

January 10th
Seeing Barlow re sewer New Road.
At housing site Croxley, meeting Mr Cole re boundaries. Staked out for Austin's cottages New Road. With Holland re repairs.
Gittins,  Fearnley Villa re case of Scarlet Fever. (A house on The Green)
Croxley laundry re ashes in sewer. Found some in gully near engine.

Croxley House to meet Col. Woolrych re boundary wall.
Examining agreement re Croxley housing site with Mr Bateman and witnessing signature.

January 27th
Mr Owen called re additions to The Firs, Croxley Green going through his Plans with him
(Private house in Loudwater Lane)

February 7th
Seeing Mr Dawe’s twice during day as to housing site at Croxley and plans.
L.G. Omnibus representative called re gradients to Cassio Bridge etc.
(London General Omnibus Company was a principal operator at the time and there appears to be a problem for the vehicles negotiating the incline of the bridge?)

February 18th
Drafting letters re prices for fence. Croxley main road widening and sending to 5 firms.

February 21st
Croxley Woods to inspect new buildings for Fireproof Company.

February 28th
Town 9.48am train attending conference at Ideal Home Exhibition, Olympia with Bateman and Dawe.

March 4th
At Dickinson Avenue re-laying on gas to No 3 Brayfield Cottages.
Cycled to Englefield Green in afternoon to see Alice. Stayed the night.

March 17th
Making tracing of plan of Croxley Green housing site for Mr Lomas, and printing on old plan (Caius College)

March 24th
Motored to Croxley Green Gravel Company Army huts, to see foundations also Fireproof Company new building.
At Ricky Park sale of POW camp fittings, bought Hurricane lamps etc.

April 16th
At Revells garage Scots Hill to inspect site for petrol store.

April 21st
Phoning Griff Colliery Nuneaton, re emergency coal. Could not send any for 9 weeks. Phoned Coal Control, A Walker re above.

Writing Brown and Sons re allotments Croxley Green.
At Revells garage Scots Hill inspecting Petrol Station.
At Singletons New Road inspecting house. Kitchen very dirty, copper leaks etc.
(A ‘copper’ was an old type of metal container, usually made of copper, for washing clothes etc.)
At Dr Evans New Road re garage, surgery etc and advising him to drainage by-laws etc.

April 23th
Mrs Grerco Scots Hill i.e. truck of coal and arranging to send two tons out of same.
At L&NW Railway station to see truck of coal consigned to Mr T W Bevan, commandeering same.

April 24th
Caxton House with Mr. Dawes seeing DBMS re materials for housing. Getting prices of same and selecting stoves, baths. coppers etc for housing scheme.

May 6th
Took Alice to Holloway College in car for Summer Term.
(Royal Holloway College for ladies, near Egham, Surrey)

May 8th
Mr Tyler tested drain at Army Hut Croxley for Ricky Gravel Company.

May 15th
Croxley to see Mr Barton-Smith re bathing place near mills. Called for Mr Catesby. We all three went to Common Moor & inspected canal etc.
Inspected Army Huts with Mr Cutesy and Fireproof Housing Company new building.

May 21st
Dickinson Avenue re gas supply to Elements house.

June 2nd
Rogers, Gas Service, Dickinson Avenue.

June 10th
Going through housing scheme Croxley Green with Mr Dawe, re sewers and connections.

June 21st
Hall called at 6pm for refuse on Lipscombe's land. Saw Mr Lipscombe who agrees to rent pit for £3 per annum.
(Hall was the council's first refuse collector. Godfrey Cornwall was later employed by Hall and progressed to working in the Council Offices. Godfrey was a founder member of the Rickmansworth Historical Society as well as collector of local history including Croxley Green and eventually lived in Springfield Close)

Croxley with him to take levels.

July 26th
To Town by 9.48am train at Housing Commission with plans & estimates of lay out at Croxley Green, discussing same with Architect.
Passed on to Quantity Surveyors at 305 Holborn, re estimates for houses. Going into details of cost & items to be deducted to reduce same.
At Stanford, Long Acre, getting 6inch maps of District for enquiry re Gas Main Extensions.
(Stanford, London, leading specialist shop for maps etc)

July 27th
At Croxley Green- Mr Izzards re (?) In garden for invalid wife.

August 4th
Motored to Uxbridge to see houses erected by Adams Housing Ltd inspecting works plans.

August 10th
Seeing Dawe re letter to Housing Commissioner tenders for Mill End & Croxley Green.

August 16th
At Scots Hill – Yorke Road numbering houses.
Inspections Holloway's bakehouse.
Trotts Dairy, Beaumont's house New Road - Edmondson there with Buck mending floor, told him to concrete wall outside, to prevent damp.
Cont read meter at Sportsman.

August 20th
At Red House i.e. Complaint as to pigs from Lodger at 276 found near boundary hedge. Pigs fairly clean. (276 New Road)
Seeing as to gas cooker at Red House. Asked Landlord to cut hedge in New Road. Heard that Austen's Lorry had knocked street lamp down in New Road. Went there with Milton sawing through service & plugging off. Phoned office to send Sills & telling him to disconnect service from main.
Inspected Foster dairy & cow shed. At Dawe’s re housing plans for Croxley.

September 10th
At Yorke Road. Men tarring paths. Smallholdings, measured Spiers plot (oats) for proposed allotments. Gravel Pits. Siegwarts factory.

September 13th
At Scots Hill with Wm. Clarke, inspecting cottage very dirty. Girl of 14 & boy of 16 sleeping in one room with 2 other children.

September 15th
At New Road Croxley Green with Milton, taking measurements of street lamps where they over hang roadway.

September 16th
At Small Holdings at Croxley to meet Spiers- he did not turn up waited 6 to 6.40 home at 7p
(Albert is referring to areas where residents could rent small plots of land, to grow fruit and vegetables for their family usage)

September 17th
Seeing Police re damage to lamp Scots Hill by Army lorry with flying boat.
Interviewing driver.
(A flying boat is an aeroplane capable of taking off and landing on sea or open water)

September 22nd
New Road Croxley Green to meet representative from London General Omnibus Co re lamps which they say overhang road & are dangerous. Testing each lamp with bus and taking measurements.

September 23th
Seeing Mr Barton-Smith re allotments at Croxley Green. Gas supply at Dickinson Institute etc

September 24th
To London by 1.29pm with Mr Raymond meeting Mr Pleasants (Brightman & Son) at office of Housing Commissioner re Contract for Croxley & Mill End & going through Clauses.
Seeing Mr Hall (Architect) re subsidy houses. (Council houses)
At Richmond Gas Store Co re Fires and parts for Cookers

September 27th

At Scotsbridge House re Complaint by Mr Campbell-Walker as to smell in Drawing Room from sewer gas could find no trace of it. Gas taps leaked on two brackets & this may cause smell.

October 15th
Town by 9.48 train with Mr Bateman, Mr Raymond to Ministry of Health, Whitehall re Housing Contracts. Mr Pleasants (Brightman's) met us there.
Interviewed Mr Raymond, Mr Bellchambers but could get nothing settled. Wages & profit questions in the way.
Saw Prince of Wales, home from Australia, pass Whitehall.

October 16th
Lamp knocked down near Croxley P.O, by RAF Lorry.

Went to Daily Mail Village Signs Exhibition, Australia House, saw design for Rickmansworth sign.

Coal emergency order papers attended too.

Wilbee's New Road re Butchers Shop to be used by Tomkins. Inspecting same & writing Food Executive Officer, Watford.

November 1st
Thames Conservancy Inspector called re money spent on Sewage since 1911/12.

November 6th
At Croxley Girls School re Gas supply.
Dr Evans re new garage & proposed alterations to house.

November 8th
Seeing Mr Dawe re housing site Croxley Green as to sewer and road. Going through quantities with him.

November 9th
With Dawe and Raymond measuring housing site Croxley Green 10 - 4 on field.
Lunch and phone call 4/9d.
Seeing Mr Spiers re allotments Croxley.

November 11th
With Barlow at Small Holdings Croxley Green all the morning surveying land for allotments.

Mr Raymond checked my plan of allotments at Croxley.

At Yorke Road testing drains at Miss Wallis' cottages, found blockage invert pipe, arranged to go again tomorrow.

Only pair of lamps lit tonight  - Milton ill.

Sills, re lighting lamp tonight he was in bed ill. Sent word to Milton.

December 1st
Dawe's Office seeing Mr Raymond and going through prices in Brightman's estimate for road etc at Croxley housing site.
Phoned Brightman re Tender for road Croxley housing site.
At Dawe’s Office meeting Brightman's i.e. Road tender & going through items and prices of Quantities. There till 1.30pm.
Office ~ Brightman phoned several times re road estimate. Arranged to send amended tender tomorrow. At Dawe’s Office till 6.45pm.

December 2nd
At Mr Dawe’s office going through Brightman's Tender for road and sewer Croxley Green.
To Town by 11.57am train.
Housing Commissioner with Brightman Tender, going through figures.
Also Housing Contract as to Schedule of cost of each house.
Seeing Mr Evetts Westminster re Gas Mains. Charges for gas in the usual units etc.
Back at office 6.45pm phoning Brightman seeing Raymond at Dawe’s office re visit to Commissioner and going through figures. Home at 7.30 pm.
Checking figures at home 8 – 8.30pm.

December 13th
Going through Brightman's tender for roads Croxley Green, and getting copies made for Housing Commission.
Also schedule of prices for houses.
Seeing Mr Raymond re same.

December 14th
At Scots Hill, Milton & Webb. Fixing a lamp near Highfield gate.
Went to Scots Hill re lamp, will not be finished today.
At Croxley Green a lamp end of New Road.
At Scotsbridge House re alteration of drain - meeting architect and builder there.

December 18th
Tyler at Croxley Green to see Webb and Milton at lamp, end of New Road.

December 20th
Dawe’s office i.e. Allotments at Croxley Green and seeing Peddle re stakes.

December 22nd
Painting numbers on stakes for Croxley Green allotments till 6.30pm.

December 23nd
At Croxley Green allotments all the morning with Dawe and Tyler staking out allotments on small holdings.
